体育与健康学院创办于1973年（黔阳师范体育科），1978年更名为怀化师范高等专科学校体育系，2002年学校升本，更名为怀化学院体育系，2015年更名为怀化学院体育与健康学院。现主要承担学校体育教育专业和大学体育教学。体育教育专业为首批“湖南省普通高校特色专业”、“湖南省一流本科专业”建设点，面向全国招生。体育与健康学院现为新时代大学教育评价改革湖南省试点（院）系，拥有“省级优秀教学团队”和两门“湖南省一流课程”，其特色课程民族传统体育被评为“省级精品课程”。学院先后被授予“全国民族体育先进集体”、“全国健康学校建设单位”、“全国群众体育先进单位”、“全国百校龙狮进课堂推广工作先进单位”、“全国阳光排舞五星级特色学校”、“湖南省民族体育先进集体”、“怀化市民族团结进步示范单位”，现为湖南省少数民族传统体育训练基地、中央与地方共建教学实践基地、游泳体育行业国家职业资格培训基地。

学院师资力量雄厚，现有教职工58人，专任教师50人，其中教授7人，副教授18人，博士19人，“省级学科带头人”1人，湖南省121人才工程入选教师2人。近年来获得国家社科项目2项，省部级科研项目30余项，在《体育科学》、《北京体育大学学报》、《上海体育学院学报》、CSSCI等国家核心刊物发表高水平学术论文100余篇，出版专著20余部。获湖南省教学比赛一等奖2项，二等奖2项，湖南省教学成果奖一等奖1项，二等奖1项，三等奖2项。

办学条件优良，各类体育场馆、场地面积超5万平方米，其中含湖南省唯一的经国际足联认证的国际标准人工草皮足球场1片，能完全满足田径、球类（篮排足、乒羽网）、武术、操化类运动项目的教学训练需求，并拥有面积近1000余平米，仪器设备总价值达200余万元的现代化多功能运动人体科学和健康促进实验室。

学生竞赛成绩显著，在国际国内的运动竞赛中，我院获金牌近200枚，曾蝉联两届湖南省大运会学院组冠军，曾获两届湖南省普通高校体育教育专业学生基本功大赛一等奖并代表湖南省参加全国体育教育专业学生基本功比赛，获得团体二等奖。

主要课程：体育概论、运动解剖学、运动生理学、体育社会学、健康教育学、学校体育学、体育课程与教学论、运动技能学习与控制、民族民间传统体育以及田径、体操、球类、武术、操化类等运动技能课程。

The College of Physical Education and Health was founded in 1973 (as the Department of Physical Education of Qianyang Normal School). In 1978, it was renamed the Department of Physical Education of Huaihua Normal Junior College. Following the upgrade of the school to university status in 2002, it became the Department of Physical Education of Huaihua University. In 2015, it was renamed the College of Physical Education and Health of Huaihua University. Currently, it primarily undertakes the programs for Physical Education majors and general university physical education. The Physical Education major is among the first batch of “Distinctive Majors of Hunan Provincial Regular Higher Education Institutions” and a construction site for “Hunan Provincial First-Class Undergraduate Majors”, enrolling students nationwide. The College of Physical Education and Health is currently a pilot department for the reform of university education evaluation in the new era in Hunan Province, boasting a “Provincial Excellent Teaching Team” and two “Hunan Provincial First-Class Courses”. Its characteristic course, Ethnic Traditional Sports, has been awarded the title of “Provincial Quality Course”. The college has successively been honored as the “National Advanced Collective in Ethnic Sports”, “National Healthy School Construction Unit”, “National Advanced Unit in Mass Sports”, “National Advanced Unit in Promoting Dragon and Lion Dance in Hundred Schools”, “National Five-Star Characteristic School for Sunshine Line Dance”, “Hunan Provincial Advanced Collective in Ethnic Sports”, and “Huaihua City Demonstration Unit for Ethnic Unity and Progress”. It is currently the Hunan Provincial Training Base for Ethnic Traditional Sports, a teaching practice base co-constructed by the central and local governments, and a national vocational qualification training base for the swimming sports industry.

The college boasts a strong faculty, with 58 staff members and 50 full-time teachers, including 7 professors, 18 associate professors, and 19 doctors. There is 1 “Provincial Academic Leader” and 2 teachers selected for the Hunan Provincial “121 Talent Project”. In recent years, the college has obtained 2 National Social Science Projects and over 30 provincial and ministerial research projects. More than 100 high-level academic papers have been published in national core journals such as China Sport Science, Journal of Beijing Sport University, and Journal of Shanghai University of Sport, as well as CSSCI. Over 20 monographs have been published. The college has won 2 first prizes and 2 second prizes in Hunan Provincial Teaching Competitions, as well as 1 first prize, 1 second prize, and 2 third prizes for teaching achievements in Hunan Province.

The college boasts excellent conditions for running. The area of various sports venues and fields exceeds 50,000 square meters, including Hunan's only FIFA-certified international standard artificial turf football field, which fully meets the teaching and training needs for track and field, ball sports (basketball, volleyball, football, table tennis, badminton, tennis), martial arts, and gymnastics. Additionally, there is a modern multi-functional sports human science and health promotion laboratory covering nearly 1,000 square meters, with equipment totaling more than 2 million yuan in value.

Students have achieved remarkable results in competitions. The college has won nearly 200 gold medals in international and domestic sports competitions. It has won back-to-back championships in the Hunan Provincial University Game college group and has twice won first prizes in the Hunan Provincial Basic Skills Competition for Physical Education Majors, representing Hunan Province in the National Basic Skills Competition for Physical Education Majors and obtaining a group second prize.
